St. Gerard Majella Church was founded in 1952. Masses were celebrated in a skating rink, then for almost a year in a circus tent until a church was built in 1953 at Inglewood and Culver Boulevards. Father John Brennan celebrated the dedication Mass in honor of the Redemptorist lay brother and patron saint of mothers, Gerard Majella. Religion classes were held on Saturday in the large circus tent until Father Brennan built the brick school in 1954 and extended it to sixteen classrooms by 1958. Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary staffed the school. Father John Doherty was pastor from 1965 to 1973, and during the pastorate of Father John McHugh, the parish celebrated its 25th anniversary in 1977. Father William Connor served from 1985 to 2001 when Father Martin Slaughter became administrator and then pastor in 2003.
